Sunday School is a special school

For my research paper, I am going to research and write about the foundation of the Sunday School in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I am related to a man by the name of Richard Ballantyne. He lived in the 1800's and after being converted to the Church, he got permission to start the Sunday School. It should be pretty cool to learn about its history and that my family played a huge part in setting up and running the Sunday School.
Richard was born in Scotland and it'll be great to do some more research into him and see how the Lord prepared him for setting up the Sunday School. He was a convert and came to America and started his life as a member of the Church helping in so many ways.
Not having done much in the way of research yet, I am not fully aware to what extent Richard went to follow the Church and what he actually did in his life and then to what extent the Sunday School went to stay alive in the hard times of the church.

Scratch all that stuff said above, I've changed my topic. Now I am going to write about why the Mormon Battalion was needed. I have been researching a little bit and I found a source or two so far that talk about that need.
My research question is: What sparked the need for the Mormon Battalion?
Some of my keywords or main concepts are: Mormons, Battle, Mormon Battalion
Others are: Mormon, War, America, Recruit, Draft, Volunteer, Mexican-American War, James K Polk, Charles Bent Hancock (my ancestor), Battalion, Brigham Young, LDS Church

    1. How did the idea of Sunday School come to be? I'm sure there are plenty of interesting records to be found.;)

  2. Sounds like a really cool idea! I think as far as research goes, it would be good to focus on his background. Why did he decide to leave Scotland? Also, I'm sure that there was lots of discussion and debate among church leaders before the Sunday School program began. It would be interesting to research how the idea originated, and if Richard participated in these discussions with the church leaders. What was his role exactly? I'm interested, I bet you'll find some great stuff!

  3. Dude! I love the Mormon Battalion. I served my mission in San Diego, which is where the Battalion ended its march. The Church has built a really cool historic site and museum that is run by senior couples and sister missionaries. It was a great place to take investigators. There was an article in the Ensign that highlighted a little about the site a few months back. Obviously going to the site itself is a little out of the question, but I am sure that you can find stuff about it and the material they present online.
